Project management--based on size, complexity, experience, team history and client expectations--must be tailored to the specific job. The most important element in project management is communication and experience. Communication between the architect, engineers, contractor and owner must be clear, regular and well documented. The architect is the owner's agent or representative during the construction phase, and must look out for the owner's financial interests in addition to any technical and aesthetic issues that arise. Since procedures for construction administration are reasonably standardized, contractors are generally familiar with the architect's expectations. Experienced contractors can make the process pleasant and expeditious, while inexperienced contractors can create a nightmare. Jim Gwin personally provides all project management services for the firm, and performs all submittals reviews and field observations. Engineers, interior designers, hardware specialists and others assist in the review of their respective portions in the project.
