The headquarters for the Mental Health Mental Retardation Authority of Harris County is located in a six-story office building in southwest Houston, and contains 112,000 square feet. The building had been abandoned for six years prior to MHMRA's purchase. All building systems had to be renovated and refurbished. The restrooms were modified to comply with ADA accessibility requirements. An adjacent building (formerly a restaurant) was converted into a conference center, which now gets heavy daily use. Beyond restoring the base building services, most of the work on this project was related to space planning and guiding the organization in establishing standards for offices. This included recommending open-office modular furniture systems that meet the ever changing needs of the organization.
